Take a part of a dynamic URL path (where the URL canonicalises)Ģ. Remember - CANONICALS are there in case all else fails - not sure how so many became reliant on it.īLOCK BLOCK BLOCK! (Only if you know what you are doing)ġ. Over the last year - so so many sites we've audited have significant index bloat for almost no non brand clicks - there are examples where a websites crawl profile was 90% canonical child paths (where Google ignored around 10% of the directives adding over 100k pages to the crawl) for less than 2k clicks from an 500k click profile. Remember PAGE RANK? well, large sites bleed link equity - and, if you are adding thousands of unessescary URLS to your index when they add little to no value then it's time to BIN canonicalising child paths and time to start using NOINDEX, FOLLOW (or, better yet, DISALLOW via robots.txt if there aren't external links to canonical child paths). Size up your CANONICAL CHILD URL counts and then evaluate how many clicks you get from canonical child URLS (Google can and does ignore canonical child > parent configurations) - then look at CANONICAL PARENT paths.
